The Masculinity Project: Barack & Curtis 10mins

Produced by Byron Hurt

With Barack Obama’s historic nomination as the first black presidential candidate to a major party filmmaker Byron Hurt turns his lens to an unlikely contrast study – Barack Obama and the infamous hip hop rapper 50 Cent. Hurt’s last journey into hip hop allowed room for a national conversation on the negative connotations associated with hip hop culture, here we are offered an unlikely match which leads to some interesting comparisons. What could Barack Obama and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson possibly have in common?

In the current political climate perhaps the producer's statement best speaks to the intent of this piece, lest it be misunderstood:

"Barack & Curtis is in no way intended to create a negative association between Barack Obama and 50 Cent. Anyone who would suggest that mis-understands what my piece is all about. Furthermore, anyone who uses Barack & Curtis to smear Barack Obama in any way, is either ignorant, or morally bankrupt. In no way do I want to damage Barack Obama's historic presidential campaign. In no way am I suggesting that Barack Obama is down with G-Unit or is a gangsta rapper cleverly disguised as a presidential candidate. Neither is Barack & Curtis intended to glorify 50 Cent. Instead, the piece is my attempt to humanize 50 Cent, examine two very different Black men who express their masculinity in two very different ways, and who took two very different paths to achieve manhood, power, and respect."

- Byron Hurt

The Masculinity Project is a partnership of the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) and the Independent Television Service (ITVS) with funding provided by the Ford Foundation.

The caucasian brother at 2:09 was really enlightening. He is so right. I really enjoyed what he said. It is really sad how black people speak from the ideas of the past, present negative stereo-types, and the idea of being victimized by the by these in society. When are black people going to rise and learn to control their imagery and the marketing of their race? They are their own worst enemies. Black people perpitrate their own fraud in their support of the negative imagery of black men, such as 50 cent. Now I love me some 50 but I don't really think President Obama and him are to be compared at all. 50's story is not the story of The Black Man, it is the story of a black man.

oh yeah his nmother was white, ha you idiots. fifty's mother wasn't white. ha talk about justice huh. White plantation owners raped black slaves for hundreds of years and then the president winds up being the son of a kenyan born's baby's mamma. Talk about irony. You idiots, wake up! Masculinity? Go get a job and take care of what your family, that's masculinity. If you're a woman and you do it then call it masculinity too. You morons will use race anyway possible. the mob is the mob. bush has more in common with fifty than barack does. i can't believe i wasted my time writing this.

Posted by hank matthews | Sep 02 2009 at 05:05 am | report this comment

how can you compare the two? i understand the similarity among the achievement but this is apples and onions. One grew up in the slums with nothing afforded to him. The other was given the world on a silver platter as compared to other African American males. What is masculinity? Whether you are black white hispanic asian indian? Masculinity is dealing with your circumstances, getting up and going to work and providing for the family and life that you have created, and if you are a woman and you do these things then you are masculine as well. The freedom ride is over. It's not about race anymore give it up.

this is so true, up until barack obama there were few successful black politicians, ta be successful and black one had ta be a superstar sports figure or musician, (it would be wrong thought ta forget about, collin powell and condolisa rice). A while back a 'frend' of mine tried explaining ta me how black people cant swim, hence why there are no black olympic swimmers, as whites cant run hence why the most successful long distance at least runners were black. I did pointout to him howver that most successful black runners are from africa and we brought out this whole environment issue, so basically it depends where adn how u grew up. My explanation is that there just has never been a black swimming idol and once that is acomplished then we will have many balck swimmers, likewise in politics barack obama is the missing black figure , now i believe we will have more black or more non caucasian politicians..........I would also like to end by quoting deny crane (boston legal) 'he dosent sound black' barack obama doesnt sound black, that steryotype is wat needs ta be changed and hopefully it will be.

Barack undoubtedly had a historic presidential campaign, I cannot argue that point. In no other election throughout US history have the citizens been fooled to this extent. The ignorant and morally bankrupt have elected to put a man in office that is single handedly tearing down all that this country was built on and for. You have been brainwashed. 50 on the other hand, great man.

Barack and 50 are indeed some how similar, but 50 holds the flag becuse he came from the bottom and made it to the top. by his creativity, talent, magic vioce and unique way of rapping. irespect of the fact that he came from a gang bang, drug dealing nebourhood but still made it legitmately.

the single and most important similarity between barack and 50cent is the fact thaty both men have dogged determination to excel.nobody thought they will be were they both are today in their various fields.

Posted by omo | Mar 27 2009 at 01:54 pm | report this comment

I think the only thing that Barack and 50 have in common is the fact that they are both two black men that are respected in the different categories that they represent, they both come from somewhere, are somewhere and are still going somewhere. They have different characters but the same sense of strength.

Posted by Naledi.N | Mar 19 2009 at 09:06 am | report this comment

50 cent and Obama do have something in common: That is that both of them are black man who started from nothing and nowhere and became very successfull and they are still going man! The two might differ from backgrounds and character but at least do they have something in common even if its only in a thin line. The two brothers kept going despite various set-backs during their lives and in the end made it and achieved something that almost no one coming from their backgrounds can achieve.

I think the comparison of the two men and the scope of Black masculinity would be increased if you included Curtis Jackson in the mix as well as 50 cent. I found the piece somewhat insightful, but in ways oversimplified, though I am grateful for starting a discussion on the subject. Furthermore, I felt that the crux of the real conversation should be the comment that summed up the expose, the connection with Black masulinity and white masculinity. How the same agression of power is looked at differently till ecoonomics don't pan out(referring to our 43rd president)

Mr. 50 is not a bad person only that he is being jugded by what he does for a living, his dressing code and most heart-breaking thing is using his background to support their unreasonable doubts about him.He may have tattoos but that only says what an emotional man he is because people express their grief and cherish the memories of their loved ones in different ways which explains the tattoos of one of themisthe son's name. What he has been thru only makes him a better man from the day he was born.

I really did find this video very interesting, in the sense that there are, in fact, very strong similarities regarding the manner in which these two very different figures exude their masculinity. Aggressiveness and strong will both come in to play in different degrees and are utilised to different extents. Yes, they are both black males, but they do what they do to achieve what they want to achieve. Barack, because of his background just does so in a more acceptable way...whereas 50 chooses a more common way to make his mark, in my eyes, not very wise...for a man with his power...he could have affected more positive change as well, but then again, his followers would not embrace a " graceful and classy gangsta"...their views are too restricted to understand what the educated man would!

i liike barack obama very much becouse of his ideas, courage, and confidance. i also like 50 cent becouse of his achievement. but i dont like mccain becouse of his critism especially agaainst obama. wake up americans, its time 4u to make change, its time to stop war,its time protect your economy, time to bounce back on track, time to stop borrowing money and giving it credit, and spending it in a way that is not benefitable to american people. time to welcome visitors, time to make change, time to vote for barack obama.

President Barak Obama is the best thing to happend to America and the whole world right now. Am sure he will be the next commmander in-chief wether the white or black people like it or not. I support him with all my heart and prayer.

I think obama is going to be the next president of the unitedstates. Everyone should be there self.

I think that Obama would be a better role model a president because he loves his country and he really wants to take black people out of the gutter and he wants to better what white people say about us and 50 cent on the other hand he's a little less care less about what he says on TV and in his music but he cant be that bad because he has a son and he tries to be a good father to his son and thats why he was fighting for custody for his son and if he didn't want custody of his son he wouldn't have wasted his time.

my thought is that Barrack and 50cent could be put in the same sentence because they are both from the same ethnicity but of a different life style. Barrack and 50cent are both men of power but this power that they have is displayed differently in life. 50cent may show his through fear but that is his way because of were he was born and raised on the other hand Barrack shows his through properness because of were he was born and raised

To recapitulate what i just saw. when i was looking at this video i saw a lot of different things that was said about 50 and Barack. i knew that they both is a successful black man. but Barack dresses in a suit and 50 is just strait up ghetto.

Posted by Deon | Oct 20 2008 at 03:44 pm | report this comment

That Obama is the better men because his successful and he not gangster.

Posted by sara | Oct 20 2008 at 03:43 pm | report this comment

well from my point of view it was great that they compared 50 and obama because it gives a chance to see how much two people have in common........................................ thats from 2 different backgrounds they have lived two different life styles. So it good that they could of compared both of them.................................50 is successful because he has a very good rapping career and obama is a successful congress man who's running for president.......... see to different back grounds

Posted by ashley B.K.A lEgZzZ fr. brooklyn | Oct 20 2008 at 03:43 pm | report this comment

Everyone would say 50 is a bad influence because of the songs, videos, and movies and Obama is great cause he book smart. They both black, rich, so are they treated differently. Why, because Obama don't influence the youths and 50 do. Why, because kids rather follow a guy who brags about getting shot nine times and is still alive.

Posted by Jeremy Matthews | Oct 20 2008 at 03:42 pm | report this comment

I think that just because their both black men doesn't mean that they have to be in the same category.50 cent is just trying to make his money and because he has to be a thug and what some people would consider a "gangster" because picture him as a buff guy doing anything else it wouldn't work. Barack is just trying to be a different type of black people. The way Barack is he is trying to have people view black people differently. He is trying to make a change but the view people already have is going to be very hard to change. the way you know he is not pretending is because he takes it very seriously. He is taking this into his home and putting it into his children's lives as well

Posted by Jazze-Rae | Oct 20 2008 at 03:41 pm | report this comment

I think that this video is very imformitive. It acullay shows that fifty cent is a really bad influence on the face of black people with all of his rapping, gangster additude, He looks so dangerous and stupid with his stupid clothes and all his other ghetto nonsense, while barack ombama is going out of his way to make a good image on the face of black people. He is making a timeless effort to run for president and his campagins are very smart and wise. If i were president, I would make fifty cent's actions illegal and ban the art of the rapping he does. all the stuff he wears and uses in his videos, BANNED! the world would be better off without it! barack is a way better infulence than stupid old fifty cent!

Posted by earl jackson | Oct 20 2008 at 03:41 pm | report this comment

I think that the message from this video is true. I agree with the fact that there is a little bit of 50 cent and Barack Obama in every man because on the weekend a man can put on a suit with a tie and go to work or spend time with their children and that makes them have Barack Obama in them but that man can also go to the club the next day and act like he's in a gang or he's a drug dealer.

I think Barack Obama I doing a good job tryin' to become president. 50 is good but I don't like that much.

Posted by Daniel Simpson | Oct 20 2008 at 03:37 pm | report this comment

i think 50 Cent is more real than Barrack Obama because 50 Cent grew up in the hood, so he kept his swagga but has more confidence. 50 also don't change for nothing. Barrack its appropriate because running for president.e has to probably change his own wardrobe and character.

there is a little bit of 50 cent and Barack some people act like Barack when they go to work but when they get around there friend they act like 50 cent in the street people can act like both 50 cent and barack

I feel dat barack and 50 cent is there own person they dont have nothin in comment. They are different role models because 50 is about the streets and drugs and every body things he is a gangster and he really not but barack on the other hand is about helping people in there lives and trying 2 do some thing great with his life.

well i truley think that obama and 50 cent shouldnt be compared because first of all even if there both black men that doesnt give them a right to compare them they still proably came form two diffrent homes and where taught diffrently on how they should be held or how to make a living. thats why obama is running for president and 50 cent is just a rapper.

the message on this film to me says a lot about who we are and how we should feel about ourselves as black. which ones we want to be a leader are a gang member and each one of us represents a little of the both of that.

Posted by zakeira edwards | Oct 20 2008 at 02:24 pm | report this comment

it is a lie to say that Obama is a gangster he is the hero to save America and the world, the fact of being black doesnt mean he cant. America needs one man to stop the economic desease, there is only one man who can do it, Barack Obama.

Maccain do not know what politics is, he thinks about war, security, in facti it is not wrong to think about security, everybody wants to feel secure, but in this exect moment, America, needs Obama, needs change, new era, peace, in other words, America needs a Baracak Obama.

During years Mccain has been in politics, he did not learn anything, he does not know anything about the economy, he knows abot war, threatinig other people.
