THIS BODY explores the fraught relationship between African Americans and the medical industry. As Sydney Hall participates in an experimental coronavirus vaccine trial in hopes of protecting her beloved New Orleans community, she and her loved ones confront the history of medical abuse and experimentation on Black bodies.

In a city replete  with health and medical institutions charged to "do no harm," many of Baltimore’s residents carry generations of traumatic stories. Join Dr. David and a panel of esteemed public health experts as they explore the history of Black Baltimoreans' relationship with the health and medical industry, its impact on wellbeing, and how to navigate necessary healing in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime health crisis.

Panelists: Dr. Letitia Dzirasa, Baltimore City Health Commissioner; Dr. Marisela Gomez, M.D., M.P.H., community activist, author, and public health professional; Shoshana Oppenheim, graduate student and pediatrics team coordinator, VALUE Baltimore.

11:25 a.m. — PANEL 2 | Unsung Heroes: Vaccine Health Champions

A conversation with health professionals and community organizers who have been on the front lines of getting our communities educated and vaccinated. They share their experiences and provide insight on what is needed to increase vaccination rates in the community.  

Moderator: Sarah Kim, reporter and host of WYPR podcast "The Daily Dose."

Panelists: Dr. John Chessare, CEO, Greater Baltimore Medical Center; Nigel Garcia, deputy director of community engagement and recruitment, Baltimore Corps; Eze Jackson, musician, artist, community organizer; and Sarah Matthews, senior hub leader, Baltimore Corps.

12:35 p.m. Panel 3 | Storytelling Impact on Social Change

Stories influence and shape our lives. Visual media impacts how we engage with the world and can influence our ideas, beliefs, and values. Award-winning documentary filmmaker Michèle Stephenson, moderates a discussion with creatives on how our visual storytellers have the power to effect social change.

Moderator: Michèle Stephenson, documentary filmmaker 

Panelists: Evelyn Brito, producer, screenwriter, event planner; Kian Kelley-Chung, activist, artist; and Zac Manuel, filmmaker.

1:40 p.m. Collaboration Sessions

Panelists meet in small groups with Story Summit participants to brainstorm potential media storytelling projects that have the potential to support and inspire greater vaccine equity within Baltimore.

2:40 p.m. Collaboration Share

Each small group will report out the result of their respective conversations to the larger group.

3:15 p.m. Closing Remarks

GRANT GUIDELINES

All media makers who attend this Story Summit are eligible to submit a project proposal for funding consideration. Projects that address one or more of the issues discussed at this summit will be considered for up to $60K in grants and additional distribution support.
