BLACK PUBLIC MEDIA

WEEKLY DISPATCH

by Leslie Fields-Cruz

Growing up, Crispus Attucks was the only Black person whose name I ever heard associated with those who fought for liberty during the American Revolutionary War. Of course, as I matured I learned there were others, even some who fought on the side of the British. But few of these other people ever had names or any specific details attached to them. This week, PBS is featuring a documentary by BPM family member Stacey L. Holman that aims to fill in some of the details my early history lessons lacked.

PBS documentary declarationsI haven’t seen Declarations: Black Americans and the Revolutionary War yet, but given Stacey’s prior track record, I expect it to be nothing short of excellent. The film premiered Monday, June 29, so by the time you read this it should be available to stream from PBS.org and the PBS app. Check it out and spread the word.

Next Monday (July 6), Michèle Stephenson’s latest film, True North: Canadian Myths and Black Power, premieres on PBS. The film revisits a critical time of conflict and transition in 20th century Canada, when global Black liberation movements converged at that nation’s Congress of Black Writers, sparking a new era of Black consciousness and self-determination.

As the United States of America celebrates its 250th anniversary this weekend, these two films offer fresh examinations of the roles Black people have played in helping “free and independent nations” get more serious about living up to their lofty ideals.

BPM salutes these two filmmakers and looks forward to funding and disseminating more of this type of content. It is, afterall, our mission and the primary impetus for our launching the new Black Stories Production Fund.

If you haven’t already donated to our 1.8 Million Donors campaign, perhaps now is a good time to start. If you’re already a donor, consider doubling down,  giving again and inviting your network to join you.

We welcome gifts of all sizes, whether one-time contributions or sustaining commitments. Whatever works for your budget and your conscience. Just know that every dollar you give will support the Fund and our mission of delivering innovative, honest stories that emerge from the global Black experience.
