BLACK PUBLIC MEDIA
WEEKLY DISPATCH
By Leslie Fields-Cruz
Giving Tuesday is a chance to show the haters we won’t be erased
Today is Giving Tuesday. Ever since we launched our 1.8 M Donors campaign, several people have asked me why the minimum gift is only $5.00. The answer is, we want to make it as easy as possible for people to show their love for BPM and Black stories.
Yes, the $1.8 million hole Congress punched into our budget when they defunded our lead supporter, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, hurts. And we’re working feverishly to replace those funds and build our Black Stories Production Fund. But, honestly, this campaign is about more than just money. It’s about awakening a movement.
Show us your love with a gift
Our goal is to attract 1.8 million donors whose generosity tells the world, unequivocally, that Black stories have value and that represention in media is vitally important. We need your help to fuel the future of Black stories.
If you haven’t already joined our movement, I hope Giving Tuesday provides the incentive you need to step up. If you’ve already given, please share my appeal video with your friends, family and colleagues, and urge them to join us.
For nearly 50 years, BPM and supporters like you have made it possible for independent media makers to get the resources and distribution they need to bring Black stories to the public. This Giving Tuesday, send us a gift and let’s say it out loud together: BLACK STORIES MATTER!
