BLACK PUBLIC MEDIA
WEEKLY DISPATCH
By Leslie Fields-Cruz
Hey BPM Fam,
I’m writing to you from California. I’m actually on vacation. But in light of the recent events, I felt I needed to address to you directly.
As many of you know, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced last week that it will go ahead and wind down its operations. Basically, this means the cessation of over 50 years of federal investment in public media. The defunding will leave independent media makers — including many of you — with fewer resources to produce and distribute their programs.
I’ve been asked, “Are you angry?” Well, yeah, I’m angry. I’m VERY angry! I’m angry at the defunding. I’m angry about the ICE raids. And I’m angry about the government’s withdrawal from this nation’s hard fought progress toward equity and inclusion. But as angry as I am, I and my Black Public Media colleagues are up for the challenge.
The loss of CPB funding will impact us greatly. It’s abruptly snatched $1.8 million from our budget for the coming year. But we’re not closing our doors. In fact, we’re working with our current partners and we’re seeking new partners who want to join us in our vision to develop a Black Stories Production Fund. This fund will not be connected to any one distribution outlet. It will empower media makers to tell Black stories and to find the public wherever they may be.
We Need Your Help
We’re ready to move ahead, but we need your help. Now, more than ever, we are looking to reach 1.8 million people with our message and we are asking for donations. If you believe in equity and inclusion. If you believe in Black stories and their the power to change hearts and minds, then we’re asking you to contribute to Black Public Media, as soon a possible. And we need you to invite your friends, colleagues and family members to do the same.
Together, I’m confident we can build a future where our stories are funded by our own hands and where no decision can silence us.
Thank you.
